Friendly, curious, and merry scent hound with a great personality
The Beagle originated in England and was developed primarily for hunting hare by scent. They were followed on foot by hunters and typically worked in packs of 12 or 24 hounds. Different sized Beagles worked over different terrain - from open fields for smaller hounds to mountainous English Border country for larger ones.
Beagles are sturdy, compact hounds with a short, easy-to-care-for coat. Females typically stand about 33cm tall and weigh around 10kg, while males are normally 38cm in height and weigh about 15kg. They have a square-cut muzzle, large brown or hazel eyes, and long, hound-like ears that frame their face.
Beagles typically live 13-16 years with proper care. They are generally healthy dogs but can be prone to certain conditions including epilepsy, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and eye disorders. Beagles love food and can easily become overweight, so portion control is important for their health.
Beagles are known for their gentle, friendly, and merry temperament. They are loyal companions and excellent with children. While affectionate and obedient with their owners, they can be determined and single-minded when following a scent. Early socialization and training are important for this intelligent but sometimes stubborn breed.
Beagles require minimum grooming maintenance thanks to their short coat, but do need regular exercise and mental stimulation. They should always be walked on a leash or in secure areas because their strong scent drive means they'll follow interesting smells without regard for safety. Beagles need a secure yard as they have little traffic sense.
Beagles adapt well to various living situations but do best in homes where they're not left alone for long periods. As pack animals, they thrive with company, whether human or canine. They need a securely fenced yard since they're prone to wandering when following scents. Beagles can live happily in apartments if exercised adequately.
